T13 - 13 Favorite Moovees

Thursday 13

I have watched about 65 Moovees since we get our DVD player. These are some of my favorite ones.

Photobucket

1. Shrek the 3rd: Oh Puss in Boots, you are efurry lady cat's dream!
2: Surf's Up: Penguin tasty?
3: Spiderman II: I really like Doc Occ with all the arms. Can you imagine the trouble you could get into with one of those things?
4: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: That dragon is way cool!
5: Pirates of the Caribbean - Curse of the Black Pearl: The only way this would have been better is if the undead monkey was an undead cat!
6: Bourne Ultimatum: I liked all the cell phone noise and a had a lot of fun running round the house every time the phone rang!
7: Ratatouille: Rat tasty?
8: X-Man: I really liked Storm and Wolverine.
9: Ocean's Eleven: For the same reason as Bourne Ultimatum, lots of bingy noises
10: Phantom of the Opera: I loved the music in this!
11: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban: I liked Buckbeak and I liked the way they turned back time.
12: Night at the Museum: I liked all the little men in the miniatures room. They would have been fun to chase around.
13: Matrix: I think I should be able to program myself to run up walls and stuff.

Honestly, I have seen lots of good moovees and I have many other favorites including Lord of the Rings, Die Hard, Casino Royale, Howl's Moving Castle, Corpse Bride, The Da Vinci Code, Underdog, Van Helsing, Garfield and others. It's also a lot of fun to be able to watch these films with my Bean and to have popcorn and pizza! Moovees are a really great human invention and it's great that we can have them on DVD to watch, as we can't go to the moovee theater.

I would like to be in a major motion picture someday, then maybe I would get invited to the premier in Hollywood!

If you like moovees, don't forget to check out Tybalt's Take with Tybalt, the Prince of Cats as he reviews some of today's best moovees every Friday for your viewing pleasure!

Way back White Cat Wednesday

Photobucket

My Bean's first Cat was a domestic longhair named Puffy. Puffy was all white. My Bean's great grandmother brought Puffy to my Bean, he was a kitten from a friend's litter. My Bean was four years old at the time.

Since it was her kitten, she was allowed to name it. The same year, she also get a baby sister and she was allowed to name the baby sister too. She name the Cat Puffy and the sister Carol. To this day, sister does not like her name, and will give her grief about it. Evidently, she wanted to be named Puffy.

Bean does not have any picture of Puffy. She know there is a film of Puffy back in O Hi O at her mother's house and that there are probably pictures too, but her mother goes off on a guilt trip if you mention the name Puffy, so it's pointless to ask.

She have Puffy for only four years. When she was eight years old, her parents get divorced and she move with her mother into an apartment that did not take pets. So Puffy get taken to the shelter. It was very sad day for my Bean, to loose her father and her beloved Cat all at the same time.

Her best rememberance of Puffy was one year for Christmas, they buy Puffy a Hartz Mountain stocking with treats and cat toys in it, and there was a box with a catnip mouse as part of the toys in the stocking. In those days, Hartz Mountain was about all you could get in the way of cat products and they had the primo catnip toys.

They had come home from Christmas shopping and put the bags down in the dinning room. Puffy smelled that catnip and tore through the bags until he found the one with the catnip mouse in it, ripped through the bag, the mesh stocking and the box and got the mouse out and started going crazy with it on the floor.

She still miss her Puffy Cat all these years later and has a soft spot in her heart for longhaired white cats. She has little white puffy cats all over the house as part of her curio cat collection.

Strangely, that was the only white cat she ever have, but she has been owned by three black cats, myself included. Of course, she is very fond of all cats, but she is especially fond of House Panthers!

Tattle Tail Tuesday

My Bean is a collector. This is just a nice way of saying she is a pack rat. Seriously. She even admit she is packrat.

While I believe that some of her things may be legitimate collections - like the curio cats - other things are just trash that she can't seem to bear to get rid of.

Photobucket

Once spring cleaning comes around, her ears grow long, her nose gets pointed and a tail pops out her back end. "No!" she wails, clutching some useless piece of garbage to her. "We may NEED this in the future!"

Oh, please.

SOME of these things might be worth something SOMEDAY down the road. Like the autographs for sports and entertainment personalities she collects. But broken bats from the worst hitters on the local teams? I know, she just want those to remember "her boys" by.

We also have collections of baseballs, hockey sticks and pucks, Miami Dolphin football things and other sports related stuff. Then there is all the books and CDs. I can almost even believe that her used ticket stubs are a collection but only because she keeps a ticket stub journal.*

ticket journal

But....how do you justify a collection of condiments?

condiment collection

I mean...what possible use could you have for rancid relish somewhere down the line?

At least she has not gone over into draconian proportions in her desire for material objects. At least, I do not think she has. But then she comes home from Blockbuster and say "Did you know they just released a new two-disc directors cut edition of Spiderman II?"

"You already have 2-disc edition of Spiderman II," I meow at her.

"But it's not a director's cut!"

See, then I worry. Because it not have pretty green cover it not as good? I mean really? I think we can live without this.

One day I must really clean the (pack)rat out of this house.

* Bean use materials she get from scrapbook shop for her ticket journal, but if you search on e-bay, you can actually find ticket journals for sale. I just thought I would mention before you ask.

What's Mew Me-Me

I have been tagged by The Fury Fighter for Tigmut'hep's 3 New Things About Me MeMe!

All you need to do is tell everyone 3 things that are new with you! Link it back to the purrson who gave it to you and pass it on to 3 more kitties you'd like to know more about! :)

I just do this me-me last Tuesday and not much happen around here, but I will try it anyway.

1. I now have domain name for my blog, which is http://www.diamondemeraldeyes.net/. I have not figured out how to show it on the top of the blog yet, but I am working on that.

2. Bean has been sick, and so we have a sleeping contest last three days. I let her win. Today she is feeling better I think and has gone day hunting.

3. Bean has bought me the 40th Anniversary Edition of the Jungle Book Moovee. I like this moovee because it has tiger and panther in it. We have not yet watch the new moovee because we have been too busy sleeping.

So that is all that is new with me.

I would like to tag:
Pumpkin;
Tesla;
and Sunny.

I have not done the petspics.blogspot.com me-me in case anyone want to tag me for that.

Nickname Me-me

This has been going around the blog sphere, but somehow I've managed to get overlooked. So I am doing this me-me voluntarily.

Post a link to the kitty who tagged you, and post the rules on your blog.

List your real name, how you got your real name, nicknames you like/tolerate, and nicknames you wish your humans would stop calling you.

Tag several kitties, and write a comment on their blog to let them know they have been tagged.

Real Name: My full name is Diamond Emerald-Eye Precious Black Cat but I usually just go by Diamond Emerald-Eyes. You can read the whole story of how I get my name here. But briefly, I was named for a white diamond shaped spot on my chest and for my beautiful green eyes.

My Bean is not one for a lot of nicknames, but here goes:

Nicknames I Like: Miss D (most people think it's "Misty", but it's not), Puss-puss, Kittenish, Princess, Sweetheart

Nicknames I don't like: Shortstuff, Shorty, Meatloaf

I would like to tag Dave at Cat's Eye to tell us how Thompson, Diego and Theo get their names and nicknames.

Doctor Diamond

Photobucket

Bean go see the doctor on Thursday. Aside from changing her medicine for her heart, she has upper respiratory infection and get some medicines for that too. So she stay home on Friday as it was a blustery day out and she wanted to nap.

So you will have to excuse me for not posting as I had to take care of the sick bean. If I do not knead her properly she will not get well.

When she not napping, we watch the two Scooby Doo moovees. It pretty restful day.

PSA - SPAY!

T-13: 13 New Temptation Flavors

T13 Dragon

I love Temptations and I just can't get enough of them. I would eat them morning, noon and nighttime too if I could ever figure out how to get into those little bags they come in.

That being said, here are 13 suggestions for new flavors of Tempations:

1. Mouse (or Rat). There is a subtle diffence between the way to two taste, but I think mouse is tastier, so they should do mouse flavor.

2. Lizard. I think most of us just play with them, but they can make tasty snacks.

3. Pepperoni Pizza. I know, I can have some when Bean eats it, but it's messy and I never get it often enough. This would be a good flavor.

4. Duck. Just like turkey does not tast like chicken, neither does duck. Sheba makes some a Chicken and Duck combo that I like a lot, so I think duck temptations would be really good.

5. Vishus Deer. Dragonheart seems to like it, so I think the rest of us should get to taste it.

6. Sour cream and chive potato chip. Kind of like the pizza, it's Bean foor that's good but it's messy.

7. Rabbit. I have heard that some cats hunt these and they look tasty, so I would like to try it. We don't seem to have any around for me to catch.

8. Vole. I dug these up and eated them when I live in the wild. They are pretty good.

9. Squirrel. I have seen Jeff the Giant Orange Cat eat these. I would like to try them.

10. Chipmunk. AL-VIN!

11. Banana. Just for Pixie!

12. Crab. We never get shellfish. I would like shellfish.

13. Surf & Turf. Might as well go for the best, right?

I figured that they do not have to make insect flavor, as those are plentiful and we can get them without resorting to bags. And I didn't include popcorn because it's not really messy, so it doesn't need to be in treat form.

A note on doctors: Misty made the comment that "We're afraid our mom is going to climb up on the table at the vet's office after we finish."

Bean says my vet is more competent than her internalist. She also said that when she lived down in Key West, the vet she used down (Lower Keys Animal Hospital) there actually did look at one of his patients humans. It seemed the boy bean had been diagnosed with a tumor, but when the vet examined the area he said it was no tumor, but a mite infection. He also said it's so rare to see that in humans that the human doctors probably won't have known about it. So the boy-bean did not need surgery.

The purpose of the meme is to get to know everyone who participates a little bit better every Thursday. Visiting fellow Thirteeners is encouraged! If you participate, leave the link to your Thirteen in comments. It’s easy, and fun!

Semi-wordless Wednesday

Photobucket

Bean's sister back in hospital, in cardiac unit of Metro General. This from complications due to the Pneumonia. She very sick, but this not immediately life threatening as she was eagerly awaiting her dinner last night.

Bean said she should not have been released in the first place, but that is was an issue with her health insurance.

I have best health care insurance on the planet. No co-pay. Bean pay for everything!

I really do not know why they say humans are smarter than Cats.

Bean have to go to see the doctor too, as she is also having problems with her heart. She has angina that stem from something called aortic stenosis and have to have her medication adjusted. She think this have something to do with the change in her blood pressure medication.

Also: Sunny has given me a Thinking Bloggers award. I finally got up off my lazy tail and put it on the sidebar. Thanks Sunny!

Me-me, Award and Tattle

Tigmut'hep has started a brand new Me-me and he wanted me to be one of his first victims participants.

What's new

It's nice and simple, all you need to do is tell everyone 3 things that are new with you! Link it back to Tigmut'hep and the purrson who gave it to you (also Tigmut'hep in this case) and pass it on to 3 more kitties you'd like to know more about! :)

So here goes, the 3 things that are new with me are:

1. I get Furminated on Saturday. I liked this a lot. At first I wasn't so sure, but it felt good having all the loose furs in my coat removed and I enjoyed it very much. My coat is also exceptionally soft and silky now (although it was pretty soft and silky to start with). It's also nice to get petted and/or scritched and not have a lot of extra fur flying around.

2. My new nickname seems to be "shortstuff". I do not know wny. I am and have always been a ruler, about 12 inches tall. I have not gotten any taller or shorter. I wonder how she would like being called "furless giant"?

3. I try a bagel. I did not actually eat the bagel, but I lick the butter and salt off of it. It was pretty good.

So now I get to tag three kitties for this me-me. So I tag

Jeter Harris because I'd like to know what he is doing to get ready for baseball season;

Mickey the Black Cat;

and Mr. Hendrix the Kitty.

you make my day Mr. Hendrix has also given me a You make my Day Award.

I also get this award from Gretchen before her Mom get so very sick. I hope her Mom will start to feeling better soon. I have already gived this award to four kitties (none of whom acknowledged it unless I pull their tail). Kind of like Tigmut'hep ignore the Thinking Blogger Award I give him before, but notice when Bonny Underfoot and Victor Tabbycat and HRH Yao-Lin give him one.

Purrrrhaps I should stop blogging in invisible ink, or writing such long blog entries that no one reads down to the bottom of them.

However, I would like to pass this award on to Dave at Cat's Eye. I read his blog every day and really enjoy it.

Just to note for Mr. Hendrix and Parker and anyone else who's resides in O Hi O: I hope your Beans never get sick and must go to hospital there. It seems my Bean's sister not only leave the hospital with some stomach crud that everyone seems to get - even my Bean's mother get it when she go in for surgery last summer - but she also leave with Pneumonia. I guess it's a "nice to have you, come again soon" kind of present. (My Bean says "and of course, having Pneumonia, does she stick a patch on and stop smoking? Noooooo!')

toysbox

Now that it is Tattle Tail Tuesday, I must do my tattle:

Dear Bean, I was checking out my toysbox the other day and noticed that the rug seriously needs to be sucked. Please see to this immediately. Thank you.

Myth Monday - Throgmorten

Photobucket

For the next few weeks I want to feature various felines in modern literature. Many of our myths come from old stories, and some new stories have found some new and inventive ways to apply the myths.

Today's feline is Throgmorten, a hero cat that appears in Diana Wynne Jones' Chronicles of the Chrestomanci series. The first book in this series is Charmed Life - in which we meet a human wizard named Christopher Chant, who is called Cat by his friends.

We learn that Cat is a good name for him, as he seems to have nine lives. The next one is the Lives of Christopher Chant in which he finds a way to jouney between the worlds. As part of an experiment - he wants to see if he can take a live animal back between the worlds with him - he decided to steal a temple cat from the Temple of Asheth. This has never been done...the cats never leave the Temple, but he figures they have so many of them they won't miss one.

However, upon breaking into the temple in runs in the Living Goddess, a female child that is said to have the power of Asheth in her. Is seems that being a Living Goddess is rather boring however, and so the Goddess makes a trade with Chant, she'll give him a temple cat, if he'll bring her some books to read.

That is is when we meet Throgmorten, one of the heros of the story and one of my favorite literary felines:

Throgmorten was a ginger. He was at that moment glaring at a black and white female cat, who had lowered herself into a miserable crouch while she tried to back humbly away. Throgmorten swaggered towards her, lashing a stripy snakelike tail, until the black and white cat's nerve broke and she bolted. Then he looked to see what Christopher and the Goddess Wanted.

"Isn't he horrible?" said the Goddess. She thrust the basket at Christopher. "Hold it open and shut the lid down quick after I've got him into it."

Throgmorten was, Christopher had to admit, a truly unpleasant cat. His yellow eyes stared at them with a blank and insolent leer, and there was something about the set of his ears - one higher than the other - which told Christopher that Throgmorten would attack viciously anything that got in his way. This being so, he was puzzled that Throgmorten would remind him remarkably much of Uncle Ralph. He supposed it must be the gingerness.

At this moment, Throgmorten sensed that they were after him. His back arched incredulously. Then he fairly levitated up into the creepers on the wall, racing and scrambling higher and higher, until he was safe above their heads.

No you don't!" said the Goddess.

And Throgmorten's arched ginger body came flying out of the creepers like a furry orange boomerang and landed slap in the basket. Christopher was deeply impressed - so impressed that he was bit slow getting the lid down. Throgmorten came pouring out over the edge of the basket again in an instant ginger stream. The Goddess seized him and crammed him back, whereupon a large number of failing ginger legs - at least seven, to Christopher's bemused eyes - clawed hold of her bracelets and her robe and her legs under the robe, and tore pieces off them. Christopher waited and aimed for an instant when one of Thorgmorten's heads - he seemed to have at least three, each with more fangs than seemed possible - came into range. Then he banged the basket lid on it, hard. Throgmorten, for the blink of an eye, became an ordinary dazed cat instead of a fighting devil. The Goddess shook him off into the basket. Christpher clapped the lid on. A huge ginger paw loaded with long pink razors at once oozed itself out of the latch hole and tore several strips off Christopher while he fastened the basket.

"Thanks," he said, sucking his wounds.

"I'm glad to see the back of him," said the Goddess, licking a slash on her arm and mopping blood off her leg with her torn robe.

(Note: you really have to admire the way Throgmorten handles getting put into a PTU*. I do not raise this kind of a fuss, but perhaps I should...)

But getting Throgmorten out of the temple is not easy, especially when he acts as his own burgler alarm. And what's more, when Chant returns to the temple to keep his side of the bargin, the finds out the current living Goddess will die when a new one becomes selected.

And the Living Goddess is always a child...

As you can tell, this book works a couple of myths into it: Cat as sacred beings, and that of the Living Goddess. The Living Goddess of Nepal is an old Hindu-Buddhist tradition of this world that has seen a lot of exposure in the media lately.

Diana Wynn Jones writes some wonderful books, and the Chrestomanci series will appeal to fans of Harry Potter.

Her works are currently published by Harper Collins. They're really worth a read, for the young and the young at heart.

Saturday Shopping

I discover my stash of treats was running low, so I send my human out to hunt for more. She did not wish to go across the bridge to Fort Myers to hunt, so she decided to try hunting at a new place called Pets Unlimited that opened up on Del Prado Boulevard around Christmas.

New Toys

The did not carry either Temptation or Feline Greenies. They have something called Tempting Tidbits instead. These are okay, but not so good as Greenies or Temptations. She also get new toys for me, plus a Furminator. When she get done there, she go hunting to Wal-mart.

Photobucket

She get me Temptations at Wal-Mart, whole bag full of different flavors. She also get me new moovees to watch: Harry Potter Years One and Two, Happy Feet with Penguins in it, and both Scooby Doo moovees. I now have all five of the Harry Potter DVDs, but I wasn't really happy with Year 2 because Mrs. Norris get petrified in it! How scary!

For toys she get me two new balls with bells in them that bounce pretty good, two new mousies and 2 spiders. And a big pink feather flamingo thing with bells on it.

"What I supposed to do with that?" I meow.

"It's to play with. You know, you could put the bitey on it and bunnykick it."

Bitey?
Bunnykick?
Right.

Photobucket

"You could always wear it as a fashion accessory."

No, I think not.

I did like the spider toys however and immediately attack the green one.

Photobucket

However, my Bean was a little concerned about the construction of the spider, as it take me less than a minute to get they eyes ripped off it. They little parts, and she retrieve them both before I do something stupid, like eat it.

Photobucket

Not that I would do that with a whole bag full of Temptations waiting for me to eat. I also get furminated, which make it nice later when she petting me as I did not shed all over. You should see all the furs come off me. I did not know I had that many loose ones in my coat!

Photobucket

Anyway, I was pretty pleased with her hunting . Except for that pink thing. I really don't know what I'm going to do with it.

Feline Friday

I sorry I do not have a Floofyhead Friday today. There was some baseball stuff that Bean was involved in and I did not get pictures taken.

I do have the following picture though:

Cruela deVille

It seems that during the cold snap this week, one of the Beans were mine day hunts showed up with a faux-dalmation coat. She was immediately re-named Cruela deVille. They are trying to get her to dye half her hair black.

This picture was taken with the billion year old digital, and it needs new batteries put in it, so the quality is not very good.

We watched Howl's Moving Castle last night, which Tybalt recommended to us. I enjoyed it a lot and Bean was really impressed by the amount of work Disney put into the dubbing into English.

So now I'm wondering, if I get a speaking part in a moovee, who would I want to do my voice-over?

I think maybe Whoopi Goldberg. I know she hasn't done moovees in a while, but I think she would be good. What do you think?

Wondering Wednesday - Animal Actors

Diamond of the Caribbean
Here I am trying out for a role in the new Disney moovee: Pirates of the Caribbean - Quest for the Black Diamond

Did you ever wonder how to become a Celibri-cat? I mean, I know Chey has become a Celbri-Cat since she announce her candidency, and everyone knows Skeezix, but what if you want to work as a product spokes Cat? How about playing opposite of Toby Maguire in the next Spiderman film or purrrhaps being a Bond Girl?

There are several different agencies that provide animal actors for work on TV, moovees, and as product spokes persons. Sometimes a product will draft their own spokesfurson.

Morris for example, came from an animal shelter. He was layed back and didn't get scared when the talent scouts clapped a couple of trash can lids togther. So they take him.

If you are an average house cat however, you still might be able to active your dream of becoming a famous Celibri-Cat. Hollywood Animals allows yourself to register as an animal actor. You do not even have to have advanced film training, they can send an advisor to work with you if you are cast.

However, some of the behaviors that actor and actress cats do on request are as follows:

Snarl
A to B
Jump
Lie Down
Go to a mark
Run
Work together
Rub
Lie on side
Wave & swat

Candidates should know basic obedience commands (sit, down, wait, recall and stay) and have good leash manners. If you are in California, Hollywood Animals now offers a special Studio Dog Training Class, which is similar to dog acting school.

You should be able to work despite lots of distractions since all sorts of things will be going on around you while you are making a moovee. You should aslo be comfortable in crowds, with small children, with other animals, and around motor vehicles and machinery.

They suggest getting AKC Canine Good Citizen certification for dogs and/or Therapy Animal certification for Cats, Dogs and other animals.

The American Humane Association has been overlooking the use of animals in films and TV since 1940. Visit AmericanHumane.org to find out more about the Guidelines for the safe use of Animals in filmed media.

Remember, it may take some hard work to become a famous Celibri-Cat, but working in films and on TV can be a fun and rewarding experiencing, both for you and your humans.

Thinking Blogger Award Kitty Limericks has given me a Thinking Blogger award.

Karen Jo writes: "I would like to pass this award on to Diamond Emerald-Eyes because her blog has so many posts about very interesting subjects that always make me think."

I have recieved this award once from Mo-mo, I am just being lazy about putting it on my sidebar. However, another one is most welcome.

I have already handed this out once, and so I will not do it again just now, but this does not mean I won't hand it out again later.

Tattle Tail Tuesday

Michael Crawford I am rather disinclined to tattle about my Bean today. For one thing, we watch Phantom of the Opera on DVD last night. It's gotten a bit on the chilly side, so while she was laying on the couch, I lay on top of her and we watch DVD together.

Humans are very warm. Their bodies give off enough heat in 30 minutes to bring half a gallon of water to a boil. So I was very happy, laying on her, being warm, getting petted and watching the DVD which had some very nice music. In fact, she say I look so contented it was pity she did not have a camera close by so she could get the expression of bliss on my face.

Anyway, Bean has seen Phantom of the Opera live several times and she likes Michael Crawford better as the Phantom then Gerald Butler. Crawford was originally cast to be the Phantom in the moovee in 1990, along with Sarah Brightman as Christine, but when Andrew Lloyd Webber divorce Brightman, the project get put on hold. The Moovee not get made until 2004, so they get new Phantom.

But she still like the film.

However, she know all the words to the soundtrack so for the rest of the evening she humm and sing to me.

You know, for a human that come from a musical background, she cannot carry a tune in a bukkit. It is painful to listen to.

So Bean, please do not try to sing anymore, kay?

On a side note, I sleep on her most of the night too. As I say, humans are very warm.

You make my day I get an award from Gretchen at Paw Prattle!

The You Make My Day Award is presented to bloggers whose blog brings you happiness and inspiration and makes you feel happy about Blogland. The rules are to pass the award along to up to 10 Kitties.

So, I wish to pass this award on to Zed Monster at Bad Kitty Cats, Black Cat at Black Cat Follies, Tripper at Life's a Trip, and PhyscoKitty.

I would give one to Annie Mosaic but the Mosaics don't like it when I do that.

Myth Monday: Catnip

High

This is not really a myth. Catnip is near and dear to the hearts...or noses...of most felines, myself included. But why does catnip effect us the way it does?

Catnip is the common name for Nepeta cataria, a perennial herb of the mint family. It is native to Europe but was imported to other countries. It is now widespread in North America, and sometimes considered a weed by gardeners.

To humans, catnip has a mild scent, but it does not evoke any sort of reaction when smelled. For Cats however, a chemical called nepetalactone in the catnip sets off a psychosexual response in many Cats which includes rubbing it all over our bodies, rolling in it, kicking at it, eating it and generally going crazy.

The reaction only lasts for a few minutes (between 5 and 15 minutes) and it make take several hours to "reset" yourself for the next dose of catnip.

Not all Cats are affected. The reaction appears to be inherited and some cats are totally unaffected by it. About 10 to 30% of any given domestic Cat population may be unresponsive to catnip.

Large Cats, like Tigers, cougars, bobcats, lions, and lynxes, can also be sensitive to the smell.

Very young kittens less than three months old and older cats seem to have less of a reaction to catnip, and kittens under the age of 6 weeks my actually display an aversion to it.

The chemical structure of Nepetalactone is similar to that in valepotriates, which is derived from the herb Valerian, and which sometimes acts as a mild stimulant to humans. (Usually Valerian acts as a sedative on the human nervous system.)

Nepetalactone effects the vomeronasal organ, which is located in your mouth over your palate. Catnip must be inhaled for it to have an effect. Eating it (such as in a caplet form) will not produce an effect.

Human herbalists have used catnip for many centuries as a treatment for colic, headache, fever, toothache, colds, and spasms. Catnip is an excellent sleep-inducing agent (as with valerian, in certain individuals it acts as a stimulant). Both people and cats find catnip can cause vomiting if eaten in large doses. It exhibits antibacterial properties and may be useful as an anti-atherosclerotic agent. (That is, it reduces the fatty substances that build up on inner lining of arterial walls and which can sometimes cause heart attacks.)

It is also used as an adjunct in treating menstration pain and is given in tincture form to aid amenorrhea (absense of mestruation).

(Note to Dragonheart: maybe your mom should try drinking some catnip tea on a daily basis?)

15th century English cooks would rub catnip leaves on meats before cooking and add it to mixed green salads. Before Chinese tea became widely available, catnip tea was very popular.

There is scientific evidence that catnip and nepetalactone may be effective cockroach repellents as well. Iowa State University researchers found nepetalactone to be 100x more effective at repelling cockroaches than DEET, a common (and toxic) insect repellent. Purified nepetalactone has also been shown to kill flies. (Pity it doesn't kill fleas!)

If you can't find commerical catnip teas, here is a recipe your humans can try:

1/2 cup dried catnip
3/4 cup dried chamomile
1 cup dried lemon balm
1/4 cup dried mint
1/4 cup dried lemongrass

PREPARATION:
Mix the herbs thoroughly, and store in an air tight container. For a cup of tea, use 2 tsp in a cup of boiling water. Steep for 5 minutes and strain out the herbs.

But don't be surprised if you find us trying to sip your tea as well!

You can find more recipes and uses for Catnip at the Creative Homemaking website.

Sad Sunday

Photobucket
Easy like Sunday Morning

The Mosaic clan ask about Bean's sister. He go home from the hospital on Thursday, almost 2 weeks after she go in. She was supposed to leave on Wednesday, but had another seizure, fall down and hit her head and have to have stitches.

Bean's mother say she still not right, but Bean says she has always been "off". Just a matter of how far from normal you want to get. To date, she has been behaving herself at home and there is no drinking. Her S.O., George, is dishing out her medications so that she can't over medicate herself.

(It should be noted that George drinks this alcohol from time to time as well, and they were both off being roaring drunks at the time this whole episode started.)

Sadly, however, her husky Sky had to be helped to the bridge on Saturday. Sky have this epilepsy his entire life, but his health had deteriorated badly over the last year. Saturday he was so bad he could not lift his head anymore, nor get up to go outside to relieve himself.

A lady vet came to the house to help him to the bridge. Then they bury him the back yard.

They had found Sky many years ago as a 6-month old puppy wandering around their neighborhood. They checked all over, since was a valuable dog, but could not find an owner or anyone who claimed him. So he end up living with them. After his first seizure, they decided that someone who have him did not want the responsibility of taking care of a sick dog, and so they dump him.

Sky was over 10 years old now, probably around 12 or 13. He had to MCL replacement surgeries about five or six years ago, and recover from both.

Aside from Sky, they have a beagle and a big mixed dog that they recently get named Buddy. Buddy, when he come to the house, did not like Sky, who was old, and was alway intimidating him.

(Again, I am happy to be only Cat. No one to push me around.)

Hope you all have a peaceful Sunday, and I hope to hear that Annie and Maobert have come home safely.

Caterday

Pug Idle IV, which was scheduled for February 24th, has been postponed indefinitely because the venue get lost. Sadly, the venue was not microchiped, which means it may never get finded again.

I have heard that some of the Pug owners last year did not do due diligence with the Pug doo, and this is why venue get lost.

Pug Idle was started four years ago to give idle Pugs a way to help raise money for the Animal Care Trust Fund and the South Florida Reading Festival.

The Animal Care Trust Fund was established in 2002 to assist homeless, abused and neglected animals. The fund provides for affordable spay/neuter, care, education, direct assistance and other programs to improve animal care and welfare. Some of the programs the fund was established to assist include: spay/neuter programs for low income and disadvantaged pet owners, assistance in the care and placement of abused animals, permanent microchip identification programs for animals, disaster preparedness for animals, early-age spay/neuter education, adoption of animals, and emergency veterinary medical assistance for disadvantaged pet owners.

The Southwest Florida Reading Festival is the area’s premiere literary event! This free annual festival incites a passion for reading. The public’s interest in leisure reading is renewed as the festival authors are announced. People hear an author speak at the festival and are inspired to borrow or buy the book – maybe even to write one of their own!

Reading is very important and I like to read. The only problem is that, being only 12-inches tall, my reading choices are limited to the 2 bottom levels of the book case, as you can see in the picture above.

This year's Reading Festival will be held on March 15th, and over 20 authors will be on hand for it.

Last year, Pug Idle raise over $2,500 each for these two programs. You can find pictures from last year's Pug Idle here. The handsome fawn colored Pug is my NMSSF Tony.

If you happen to see a stray venue wandering around, please send it over to the Lee County Animal Services building on Six Mile Cypress so that we may hold Pug Idle Iv.

Tropical Tails is still on and is scheduled for February 23 at Coconut Point Mall in Estero, Florida. Only humans and leashed dogs are allowed at this event, which I think it very discriminatory.

While the Pug Idle venue is getting lost, Ann Curry, the Zebra that escaped from the North Fort Myers zoo, has been apprehended. You can read a special interview with Ann here. She was supposed to be going to North Carolina when she bolted. Can you blame her? It much nicer in Florida this time of the year.

Sadly, Skeezix big brother Mao has been missing since Wednesday and has not come home yet. It is doubtful that he is heading for either North Carolina or Florida at this time. Make sure you stop by MaoBert's blog and leave him some purrs for his safe return.

Annie, one of my fellow House Panthers, from Krasota Castle Cats is also missing. She left on Thursday and has not been seen since. Hopefully she and Mao will both return home safely this weekend.

There are many things going on this weekend in Southwest Florida. The Cape Coral Festival of the Arts is this weekend. Bean will probably go on Sunday. Tomorrow, she is going to the Lee County Sports Complex, her summer home away from home, to pick out a new seat of the upcoming baseball season. Last year she let Justin pick the seat for her, and she ended up hating it.

TC Bear is in town and will be at the Stadium tomorrow as well. It is also the start of the Minnesota Twins free youth baseball clinics which will be going on from now until the start of Spring Training in February. Children from ages 5 to 16 may participate. Bean will take pictures for her baseball blog, she always do.

Floofyhead Friday - Coca-Cola Bear

Floofy Head Friday Header

Coca-Cola Bear 1

This is Coca-Cola Bear. He is Jeter Bear's best little friend and big brother. Even though he is smaller than Jeter Bear, he is the big brother because he is older. Bean get him in 2003 when she was still living on east coast.

Coca-Cola Bear 2

She get him a 7-Eleven. He still has his tag on and I am not supposed to be play with him because he is a collectible. He's not as soft as Jeter Bear anyway, so I not really overly interested in him. However, his whiteness goes well with my black furs, don't you think?

Coca-Cola Bear 3

Last night we watch Garfield - The Movie. It was a little weird because it all real life except for Garfield, which was CGI animation. However, there were lots of cats in the moovee, so it was interesting.

It does show why I would not want a brofur or sisfur.

When Jon adopts Odie, he sort of cuts Garfield out for a while, the wrong thing to do when introducing a new animal into a household. You need make sure the ones that were there first continue to feel secure in their place. Jon fusses all over Odie instead and even takes him out on his date with Liz, leaving Garfield alone. Then to top it off he exiles Garfield from the house. How can you blame poor Garfield for the way he act after that?

I think I will stick to the plush brofurs and sisfurs like Coca-Cola Bear. They do not mind if I get all the attention in the household.

One thing I did think was funny though was in the beginning of the moovee when he was trying to wake up Jon, he gets cuddled and he's like "No Cuddling"! That is how I am. I will sit next to my Bean but I hate being cuddled! No thank you! I am not a cuddle bug!

I also liked his cannon ball to wake Jon up. Happily, my Bean is no where near as hard to wake up!

Speaking of which it is now wake up time for her, and breakfast time for me, so I will purr at you later!

Thoughtful Thursday

You know how...like...when you are checking out something in your house - say the top of the bookcase - and something in the same area falls to the floor and you get blamed for it, even though you had nothing to do with the thing falling?

And, you how bent out of shape the humans get if that something breaks?

So, I just wonder, how come when like Underdog or Spiderman wrecks the whole city, nobody ever says anything to them?

Oh, I know, moovee not real, but it very unrealistic too.

I mean, we see him stealing - yes stealing - Italian food and a bagle in the movie, not to mention the sandwich he get when he crashes through the office building. Don't tell me doggie doesn't know he's stealing, doggies are the ones that are always barking to protect their property.

So, it's not okay that the humans steal jewelry, but it is okay if the beagle steals a bagle? From the police yet?

Then he apprehend "Cat" burglar - who happens to be human so I do not know why they call him "Cat" burglar, he not Cat - and drops him on the roof of the patrol car he just steal bagel from.

Who pays for breaking the hood of the patrol car? Maybe insurance cover it one or two times, but insurance company gonna start not insuring acts of superhero pretty fast if it keeps happening. Not to mention who the burglar who is the burglar going to sue for getting his back messed up? I'm sure the city will not be happy if he turns around and starts talking about use of excessive force when they catch him.

Maybe this is why superheros must wear costume and keep their identity hidden? So no one can sue them for property damage and injury?

Spiderman - you know - take out whole city blocks! Big chunks of concrete go falling down to the street, nearly crush the people.

Do you know the kind of trouble I'd be in if I was up on the roof and a chunk of the roof fall off to the ground? I mean, really! Peter Parker could go swinging around town without a mask and most people wouldn't know him - just look at the subway scene in Spiderman II. So why he wear a mask? It's probably so no one can send him a bill for the office building he destroy when fighting Doc Occ.

And James Bond in Casino Royal, he like totally destroy this one construction site while he chasing this guy. Okay, he get in trouble for storming the Nigerian Embassy, but no one say word to him about building? Do British Intelligent Agency play for the damage to building? I pretty sure Acts of James Bond not covered in insurance policy. He not God, for one thing.

You know in Spiderman that guy at the Daily Bugle that is always printing bad things about Spiderman? He should have newspaper on expose on property damage caused by Spiderman if he really want to write something bad.

Maybe that why we not have superheroes in real life? The cost of the crime fighting just too high for anyone to undertake?

So now you are say "Okay Diamond, what did you do that got you thinking about this?"

Nothing.

It's just that bounty hunters come back again yesterday and they park in our driveway and so Bean could not get in to park her car until they left. And they take up WHOLE driveway which you can usually fit three cars if you park close together. So she a little miffed about this.

I guess they really want this guy:

Dangerous Criminal

But she have same answer for them she give them before. She doesn't know and he still not look familiar. They leave flyer this time. They really want this guy I guess because he convicted felon, and beat up on Law Enforcement Officer (LEO). They offering $2,500 reward.

They decide to go check out Vincennes Court. She say that Vincennes Court have different number system then Vincennes Street but they can check it out if they want too. I think she just happy they get out of her drive way.

So, if having bounty hunters in her driveway get her upset, just think how she would be if Spiderman took out the front of her house!

2 for Tuesday

The 7 things Me-me keeps going around and I have done it twice already now, once in September and once in November.

Now I get tagged for it 2 more times, but that is okay, I'm game.

Here are the rules:

* Link to the person who tagged you and post the rules on your blog;

* Share 7 random and/or weird facts about yourself;

* Tag 7 random people at the end of your post & include links to their blogs;

* Let them know they’ve been tagged by leaving a comment on their blog.

So here are 7 for Tybal:

1. I like to eat meat-by-products. They are yummy. If you don't believe me, look the back of a bag of Temptations. The first thing listed? Chicken, Turkey or Beef-by-products. See? Yummy!

2. I like to eat blue jays. They are yummy too, but hard to catch. They come with meat-by-products built in.

3. When I lived as a wild kitty, I would dig up voles and eat them. Not a bad meal, but usually not enough food for me.

4. I am a total nut for tummy rubs. I will offer up my tummy anytime, anywhere...

5. I feel completely safe when my human is around. Nothing can bother me, not tom cats or fireworks...nothing.

6. I do not like to have my picture taken when I am grooming myself for using the litter box. Most impolite. I do not take pictures of you in the shower, do I?

7. The idea of getting water out the tap fascinates me, but the minute someone turns on the water so I can try it, I run out of the room like my tail was on fire.

Now, here are 7 for Tesla:

1. I use a piece of lumber as my scratching post. It's old, and every once in a while, I pick up a splinter from it. But it's still my favorite place sharpen my claws.

2. Sometimes I eat baby crows. The adult crows will then usually dive bomb me when I am outside, which is annoying because I have to hide under something and can't lay in the sun.

3. My favorite toys are my mousies. I will chase these for hours if I can get someone to throw them for me. My least favorite toy is the red dot.

4. I do not usually eat human food, but sometime will mooch some cheese, milk, ice cream or pepperoni if I can get it.

5. I used to eat Fancy Feast, then I was really into Meow Mix Market Select. Now my favorite wet food is Sheba!

6. I enjoy watching cartoon moovees better than the live action moovees. We watched Underdog last night, which was live action, but which was still pretty good.

7. We do not really know how old I am. The vet guesses somewhere between 8 and 10, but he's not really sure.

I am not going to tag anyone, only because this me-me as been around for so long that I think everyone has done it. Instead, I am going to get a sharp stake and pound it right into the heart of this me-me in the hopes that it will stop resurrecting itself.

Hero Dog

A black Labrador that bit a 13-year-old boy's foot repeatedly, waking him up, is being credited with saving the boy and two of his friends from a house fire. Christopher Peebles said he woke up Friday morning to feel his dog Laney biting his foot repeatedly in the basement of his family's home, where he and two friends had spent the night.

"I thought she had to go to the bathroom, but she never bites me," Peebles said Friday.

He and his friends walked upstairs with Laney and noticed smoke everywhere in the home.

Myth Monday - Chinese Zodiac

The Chinese Zodiac or astrology is the divination of the future from the Chinese calendar which is based on astronomy and ancient Chinese Philosophy.

The calendar was set over 6 thousand years ago and is split into sexagemary cycles of 60 year each.

The animals that you see in Chinese restaurants are called the "Zodiac" and they are the Rat, the Ox, the Tiger, the Rabbit, the Dragon, the Snake, the Horse, the Sheep, the Monkey, the Rooster, the Dog and the Boar.

Aside from the animals being assigned to a person by the year (outer animals), they are also assigned by month (called inner animals) and by the hours of the day (called secret animals). This creates a total of 8,640 possible combinations that a person might be and all aspects are critical for the proper use of Chinese astrology.

But the purpose of this post is not to explain how to do Chinese Astrology, which would take forever.

Dave from the Cat's Eye blog linked to a post called Satan in the Litter Box in the Rake Magazine.

It is a commentary piece by someone who does not have a good relationship with their cat, and it is not a well researched or thought out piece either. She writes - among other things - that there are no "Man's best friend" genre movies staring cats, or bomb sniffing cat or seeing-eye cats. There are actually "seeing-eye cats" that see for other cats. We are a little short to serve as guides for humans, but there are cats that work as hearing-ear cats for humans.

As for movies try 1965's That Darn Cat! or 1978's The Cat from Outer Space, both of which have heroic cats in them. There are more, I just cannot think of them all right now.

Then the writer goes on to say:

"The next time you go out for dim sum, check out the animals on your placemat. You’ll find a pig, a goat, a rat, even a snake! There is no year of the cat in Chinese astrology. They have a dragon. A pretend animal was better than a cat."

Cat was domesticated in Egypt about 5 thousand years ago, a full thousand years after the Chinese made their calendar. So they could not include a domestic cat because there were not invented at the time. Dragons on the other hand, were known from fossils of Dinosaurs and were more "real" at the time then a Domestic Cat.

Felines are however represented in the Chinese Zodiac by the Tiger, which is associated with good fortune, power and royalty and which is viewed with both fear in respect. Generally all Eastern cultures believe the Tiger, not the Lion is the king of beast. (I tend to agree, Lions are lazy and selfish.)

The Tiger is similar to Aquarius in the Western cultures, but its fixed element is wood, not water.

Tiger people are difficult to resist, for they are magnetic characters and their natural air of authority confers a certain prestige on them. They are tempestuous yet calm, warm-hearted yet fearsome, courageous in the face of danger yet yielding, soft and mysterious in unexpected places. (This sounds very much like a Cat, does it not?)

They enjoy a life full of challenges and unexpected events, like visiting unusual places and meeting interesting or outstanding people. Other people in their area are easily attracted by the tiger's enthusiasm and way of life. Tigers find pleasure in the unpredictable, and while other people would rather make a backward step, they are not afraid to explore the new and unusual. But it is not that simple to interest the Tiger. What they really need is first-hand experience.

Usually open and frank, these people are likely to withdraw and can be aggressive when trapped. As soon as Tigers have regained their sense of security their confidence also returns, enabling them to set out once more. These people usually tend to trust their instincts, though there is another side of their personality, which assesses situations thoughtfully before they launch any actions.

Their friends usually secretly admire their determination and optimism, though sometimes may find it complicated to share the Tiger's enthusiasm and can be pushed away and left behind. Although Tigers can be courageous and generous friends, if they are not able to achieve what they want, they can be inflexible and self-centered. So if your friend was born in the year of the Tiger, there will be highs and lows in your friendship, but the friendship itself will remain firm.

Tiger people are most compatible with Horse, Dog and Pig people, but they do not like Rat, Ox, Snake, Rooster or Monkey people.

Tiger is a winter sign, associated with the month of February, their color is Green, and their gemstone is the Sapphire.

The last Year of the Tiger was from 28 January of 1998 to 15 February of 1999 and it was an Earth Tiger year. The next "Year of the Cat" will be from 15 February of 2010 to 3 February of 2011 and it will be a Metal Tiger year.

Years are assigned one of the five elements (energies, or forces) - Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water - just like they are assigned cycles of animals. These are considered modifiers to the characteristics of each of the 12 animal signs. Each of the animal signs is governed by a Yin or Yang direction as well.

Again, I do not wish to get into the whole system of Chinese Astrology here, although it is really a fascinating subject. Much information is available on line and there are a number of good books available on the subject if you should wish to learn more.

I just find it unfortunate that there are so many ignorant individuals in this world, and that some magazines or newspapers actually allow them write and publish things.

Bloggers of the World AwardI had meaned to write this on Saturday, but I got distracted and before I knew it, Saturday was all over. Then Sunday came and went as well.

In any case, Catnip Corner has given me this Bloggers of the World award. This award was created by Colin and the only rule for this award seems to be that you link back to Colin as the point of origin of the award.

In turn, I would like to pass this award on to Dragonheart and Merlin in Germany, Adan in Taiwan, Mickey in Nova Scotia, Yao-Lin on Isle of Wright in the UK, and Pablo Down Under.

Floofyhead Friday - Hibbing Husky

Floofy Head Friday Header

This is Hibbing Husky with my treat box...

Hibbing husky

With the Cold we have been have experiencing, Hibbing has been doing duty as a draft dodger. That is, he lays down in a drafty place and stops the cold draft from coming in. He is good at this as Huskies like cold weather and he likes to lay down. But now he thinks he deserves a treat for being such a good Floofyhead.

Hibbing is named for Hibbing, Minnesota, the hometown of Eli Niphead. Bean was trying to think of a "cold" name for him, since Huskies, even floofyhead ones, like cold weather. Eli say it never unfreeze in Hibbing, which is in the Iron Range in Northeastern Minnesota. Bean said that she has since heard that it does unfreeze for about a month in the half in the summer, but as you can see in their website, it's a great place for winter sports.

Hibbing Husky

When he is not working as a draft dodger, Hibbing usually hangs out with a pack of plush brothers on one of my old beds that they have taken over.

He was adopted from the St. Andrews Greenwall Shelter probably just under a year ago. Bean says she was pretty sure it was after the start of Spring Training, because she almost never goes to that Greenwall, but she couldn't pick up the prints she'd ordered at her usual Greenwall because the photograph machine wasn't working. So she had to go to the St. Andrews one instead.

Furr those of you who left comments about getting space heaters, we have several although they are called Cat Heaters because they heat Cat, not space. We can usually get the bedroom pretty warm with them, but the rest of the house is too big to adequately heat that way. So when I get up in the morning, it was furry cold in the icy kitchen. Happily today was not as cold as yesterday, although Bean still bundles herself up like Nanook of the North before she heads out hunting.

Thursday 13 - Little Balls

Thursday 13

So these are my little ball toys:

Photobucket

2 mini-tenis balls, 2 spike balls (which are very much fun to leave right in front of human's bed at night so they will step on them in the dark when they get up to go to the bathroom), and 2 crinkle balls.
2 puff balls, and 2 glitter balls.
And my favorite 2 flitter balls (made by SmartyKat with feathers on them).

But that is only 12 so to make it 13 I give you:

Photobucket

Bean's Tiger Woods ball, which I not allowed to play with. I do not understand this, as it's Tiger ball, so it should belong to Cat, right?

Right.

Glad you agree.

The purpose of the meme is to get to know everyone who participates a little bit better every Thursday. Visiting fellow Thirteeners is encouraged! If you participate, leave the link to your Thirteen in others comments. It’s easy, and fun!

PeeEss: It is now cold enough to snow (32 F/0C).

Inside the house.

I know, I know, it's -102 c where ever you live, but please keep in mind that we don't have central heating or double paned storm windows or anything like that to keep the cold outside the house.

I have ice on the water in my water dish.
