Toesday

Diamond's Toesies

This probably would have been a better picture if bean hadn't put her finger in front of the flash. And of course, once I saw she was stalking over here with that flashy box, I 'mmediately scrambled up on the toesies so I could see what she doing.

Check out these toesies:

Miss Diamond,Tag

And now, a bit of humor on this Toesday...

The Creation Myth

On the first day of creation, God created the cat.

On the second day, God created man to serve the cat.

On the third day, God created all the animals of the earth to serve as potential food for the cat.

On the fourth day, God created honest toil so that man could labor for the good of the cat.

On the fifth day, God created the sparkle ball so that the cat might or might not play with it.

On the sixth day, God created veterinary science to keep the cat healthy and the man broke.

On the seventh day, God tried to rest, but he had to scoop the litter box.

Tybalt, Prince of Cats and my favorite Moovee critic has honored me with the Premio Dardos award.

"With the Premium Dardos, recognize the values that each blogger shows each day in commitment to transmit cultural values, ethical, literary, personal etc. that, in short, demonstrate their creativity by alive thinking that remains intact from their letters and words."

Award

Thank you very much Tybalt, I will try my best to live up the values of this award!

I now wish to pass this award on to:

Zoolatry;
my new furriends at T'Abby Normal and the Stygian Panther;
and to a great Tuxie and her tabby brofur: Samantha Black and Mr. Tigger.

Midnight Myth Monday - Feline Totem Animals

Diamond

Everyone has nine totem animals. These animals represent the "medicine" or power they carry with them and offer to you. Seven of them come to you by the seven directions surrounding your physical body. This is the 4 directions of east, west, north and south and above, below and within.

The other two are ones that walk by your side and are seen in your dreams. They are revealed when you are ready to see them and/or call upon them to utilize their gifts.

Animal medicine refers to the power or "medicine" that particular animal offers. For example, someone who is connected to the horse usually has the same attributes as that animal such as great physical strength, nobility and willingness to please. They will go the distance, are reliable, and steadfast.

An animal does not have to be in your totem for you to call upon their medicine. It depends on the circumstance. In most cases your totem animals are more than capable of providing you with the necessary tools.

These animal spirits are here to assist us in our earthwalk. They provide the necessary connection to the great spirit and enable you to connect our body, mind and spirit to all that is. The more you recognize your connectiveness or oneness with these spirits the better you are able to utilize their gifts.

The Native Americans recognize the following Feline Totem animals and their medicines. It should be noted that animals such as the Lion and Tiger were not known at the time North America was originally discovered, but then, the same could be said of the horse.

Puma and Cougar are Usually different names for the same animal - the so called Mountain Lion. But Puma can also refer to a cat in Jaguarundi family and most like refers to a Jaguarundi (sometimes called the "little lion").

Panther refers to the black variation of the South American Jaguar and not to the endangered Florida Panthers, which are are a branch of the Mountain Lion family.

Cat: Guardianship, detachment, sensuality, mystery, magic, and independence
Cheetah: Swiftness, insight, focus; also nourishment and mother figure
Cougar: Leadership, loyalty, courage, taking responsibility, foresight
Lion: Family, strength, energy, courage, guardian and protector
Lynx: Keeper of secrets, guardian, listener, and guide
Panther: Protection, hidden emotions, introspection, caution, careful decisions
Puma: Companion on journeys to other worlds, grace, silent power
Tiger: Strength, valor, power, and energy

My Boootiful Photo Shoot

Here are some of the pictures that were taken of me at the Walgreens Call to Action Photo Shoot. My bean has added the frames and the word arts to the pictures:

Miss Diamond,Howl-N-Scream

I was not rolling my eyes at the photographer. I was trying to look spooky.

Miss Diamond,Howl-N-Scream

Despite the fact that this held outside, I behave myself and hold very still, just like I learn at the Daisy Curly Cat school of modeling.

Miss Diamond,Howl-N-Scream

Here I think I look especially menacing in this picture!

I wish to say I was a VERY GOOD GIRL. We get in the car to go to the photo shoot and I do NOT go in the PTU. I behave myself very well in the car. Then my bean hold me while we wait for Roscoe the Woofie to get his pictures taken.

Then it my turn. I sit on a little table and they put my little devil cape on me. They have bandannas for pets not have costume, but I bring my little devil cape.

Then I do my posses and the photographer was VERY impressed by how I sit so well for the camera and not need leash or anyone to hold me while I get my picture taken.

After it is over, I get back in the car - but NOT in the PTU - and we drive home. By this time I was very hot and tired out, so I was happy to be in the air conditioning with a big drink of cool water, lots of treats and then a catnap.

I also get a very good feeling knowing that I have helped out Best Friends Animal Society and the Delta Society, two very good organizations.

On a side note, Disney Family is holding the Bow-Wow-Ween Contest for best woofie costume pictures. I guess they do not think cats can dress up. I am going to enter, just to show them different.

I do not know what I would do with a year's worth of dog food, but I can assure you that I do cute and cuddly better than any woofie, and I think it very unfair that cats are always left out of contests such as this. When my picture get posted, I will let you know so you can vote for me!

Wag the Tag and an Award

What Lo Knows has tagged us for the 5-things Blogging me-me.

The rules for this me-me are...

1. Write about 5 specific ways blogging has affected you either positively or negatively;
2. link back to the person who tagged you (See above);
3. link back to the parent post (Sadly, this link is gone);
4. tag a few friends or five, or none at all.

Miss Diamond

1) For me, the most recent effect blogging has had on me was to get me interested in digital scrapbooking. It probably wasn't that much of a stretch, since I've always enjoyed regular scrapbooking and it ties in with my photographic hobby as well. It's also given a me a new love for for computer graphics, something I've usually hated in the past and always dug my heals in about working on.

2) Diamond likes to be the center of attention and gets treats and pets, so for her, blogging has allowed her to become something of a celebri-cat, at least in her own mind. It also allows her to be vocal about the issues she cares about (like Domestic Violence and the price of Temptations).

3) I have found that I have fans in far flung corners of the world, who almost ever write me, and lots of people who hate my guts who always do. As a result, I now have a hide so thick not even the horn of a rhinoceros could penetrate it. I am sure this will serve me well, should I actually end up as one of the featured Bloggers on the Fort Myers News Press next year (as Ed and Ed seem to be planning).

4) I've discovered that if I don't blog for a few days, nobody really cares, but if Diamond takes time off, it's a major CAT-A-Strophe. She also has more friends then I do, which is why I won't let her have her own myspace page.

5) It's allowed me to explore different places in the world that I most certainly wouldn't get to if I had to travel. I'm nearly as bad as Miss D about going places, although cars don't bother me much. Airplanes and buses are a whole different situation.

On the whole though, I've blogged for so long - even before there was "blogging" per se - that it's really hard to say it's affected my life one way or the other. It's certainly made my website(s) easier to update as push button publishing is a heck of a lot easier than building a site in xhtml from the ground up.

As for passing this one on, we'd like to tag Daisy the Curly Cat, as I'm sure her answers would be most edifying, Not the Mama whose comments would be interesting to read I'm sure, Rocky and the crew at Artsy Catsy, who inadvertently introduced Diamond and I to the Cat Blogoshere, MoMo, down under, who I'm sure is looking forward to summer, and the Hotties, over at House of the (Mostly) Black Cats.

Diamond would like to thank Mr. Hendrix the Kitty for her wonderful Brilliant Weblog award. (She does so love to get awards.)

Here are the rules:
1) Put the logo on your blog.
2) Add a link to the person who awarded you.

Diamond and I would like to nominate the following blogs, which enjoy reading on a regular basis:

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Miss Diamond, Domestic Violence Awareness Tag

You have probably heard by now about the tragic case of Norman, the orange tabby who was killed by little known actor Joseph Petcka.

Petcka is on trial in New York after Norman was found dead in his caretaker's apartment with broken teeth, broken ribs, a broken leg, a torn tongue, massive internal injuries including bruised lungs, and a bruised liver and a chest cavity filled with blood.

He died a very painful death.

The 37-year old bit part actor who has bit roles in "Sex and the City" is charged with aggravated cruelty to animals.

Norman was not the victim of cruelty to animals. He was the victim of Domestic Violence.

Norman was killed because Petcka believed that Lisa Altobelli loved Norman more than she loved him. This is probably the case, given the way this man acted. He left the broken body of Altobelli's beloved pet in the apartment for Altobelli to find. Aside from the physical abuse inflicted upon poor Norman, Altobelli was the target of psychological domestic violence, which is just as painful and devastating as were the injuries to Norman.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month and Norman may as well be the feline poster child for this cause.

I too have had my life touched by Domestic Violence. When I live with Loretta-Bean, her husband would become angry and belligerent. He would slap her and threaten her as well as threaten injury to me, although I hide under the bed when he get angry so I never get hurt.

But finally one night, he punch her and so she have to have the police to come and get him. It was then that she knew she had to move away because once he get out of jail he would come to kill her. So she move to live with her friend that have pit bull that could protect her, but I could not go because the pit bull would have savaged me.

So that how I come to be with my current bean. I was not happy at the time, because I very much love Loretta-bean, she very good to me, but I am now very happy in my current home and could not ask for a better place to live or a better companion.

My story have a happy ending, although maybe not so happy for Loretta-bean. But not all stories do as is the case of Norman.

To this day though, I remain afraid of many male humans, and will not go by them. Their voices frighten me.

While domestic violence is often the lot of women and their children in a relationship, there are cases where the man is focus of domestic violence. My bean has seen this first hand as one of her co-workers was in an abusive relationship. And of course, it occurs in same sex relationships as well.

The first Monday in October, This year it will be October 6th, is set aside as the Day of Unity against domestic violence. You can visit the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence at the link I have provide above.

I have also created a badge which you may put on your website. The image is shown in large size above, but I have resize it to 200x200 pixels for use on your blog. Here is the code for the badge which you may cut and paste to place the badge on your blog.

<center><a href="http://www.ncadv.org/takeaction/DomesticViolenceAwarenessMonth_134.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w45/manateeshockey/graphics/DVAtag_092608_200.jpg" alt="Domestic Violence Awareness badge" width="200" border="0" height="200" /></a></center>

I hope you will join me in helping raise awareness against Domestic Violence during the month of October. It is too late for Norman, but purrhaps we can stop this from happening to other animals, children, and humans.

If Petcka is convicted, he will face just two years in prison. This is not much punishment for ending the live of a kind and loving feline as Norman in such a cold and brutal way. As of Friday, the jury was still deadlocked after five days of deliberations.

There is a online petition you may sign asking the judge to give Petcka the maximum sentence. The goal is 1,000 signatures, they have just over 500 right now. Please consider helping by signing the petition as well. Thank you.

First Aid on Friday

Do you have first aid kit? Your human probably have one in the house for their use, but do you have one? Prompt first aid can be very important to cat or dog and having a kit made up and ready can be very valuable in providing quick first aid until a vet can be contacted.

Even if you do not go outside, you might get injured. (Like the time Dave accidentally spill hot soup on Diego.) Here is a kit that can be put together from common objects:.

* Bottle of Powder Stypic (to stop toenail bleeding)
* Pair of Latex Gloves (to give your health care provider protection from bloods and other fluids)
* 1" by 6" year of Sterile Gauze Bandage (to wrap wounds)
* A bottle of eye and skin wash, 1 Fl. Oz (to flush wounds)
* Package of triple antibiotic Ointment (to apply to wounds)*
* Package of Hydrocortisone Cream (rashes, itching, spider bites)**
* Iodine Antiseptic wipes (sterilization)
* Insect Sting Wipes (apply to insect bites/stings)
* Roll 1/2" by 2 1/2 yard Adhesive Tape (to secure bandages)
* Gauze Pad (to apply to wounds)
* Pair of scissors (for trimming furs around a wound and to cut the bandages and tape)
* Hand Wipes (for attendant clean up)
* Antiseptic Towels (to clean wounds or your attendant's hands)
* Cotton Swabs (apply ointment or creams)
* Tweezers (to remove splinters, ticks, etc.)

You should store you first aid kit in a waterproof container and you should tape a list of important phone numbers to the inside top of the box.

Your list of phone numbers should include:

* Your Veterinarian, including their full name and address.
* Microchip Company and the chip number for you and your fur-sibs.
* Local Animal Control
* Local Human Society
* Nearest emergency animal hospital
* Local law enforcement agency
* Local Red Cross chapter
* Animal Poison Control center
* Pharmacy for Pet Medications.

Make sure to take your kit with you if you are going boating or camping or on a trip always from home and always make sure that you have an additional list of phone number made up for the area you are traveling to.

If something should happen to you, your human may not have time to find the phone book to get the phone and location of the nearest emergency animal hospital.

Remember that first aid is NOT a substitute for proper veterinarian care, but prompt first aid COULD save your life while a veterinarian's care is being obtained.

* My bean wish me to add that some humans are allergic to a drug called penicillin. I do not know if this happens in cats, but if so, you should not use Triple Antibiotic Ointments. Instead use a regular first aid cream as use of the Triple Antibiotic Ointments may cause a staph infection which would be even worse.

** Even a 2% hydrocortisone cream can be very useful in the treatment of spider bites, but especially those of the poisonous brown recluse spider which does not always react to other types of treatments.
